Hurricane Mitch

Hurricane Mitch was the most powerful hurricane to hit during the 1998 season with nearly 11,000 deaths and 2.7 million people left homeless or missing by the end of the year.  Safe Harbor initially responded with relief teams, first in the Dominican Republic and then in the small village of San Juan de Limay in Northern Nicaragua where 16 people had died during the hurricane.  Some of the highlights included:

  • Built 150 homes employing local carpenters, using trees that had been uprooted by the flooding
  • Co-labored with Food for the Hungry
  • Sent out a missionary family to oversee the work and build relationships
  • Short-term Christian medical teams worked in local clinics, sharing the gospel with patients
  • Ordained national Vicente Gomez
  • Planted a church,  Calvary Chapel San Juan de Lemay
  • Continued to provide support and teams through Calvary Chapel Rancho Santa Margarita
Oh sing to the Lord a new song; sing to the Lord, all the earth! Sing to the Lord, bless his name; tell of his salvation from day to day. Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous works among all the peoples! For great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised; he is to be feared above all gods. Psalms 96:1-4 ESV
